about caryl beach

For many years, I have documented my experiences in the landscape, which have evolved into a visual diary, a journal, which records and reflects my everyday journeys. As I travel pathways often familiar and occasionally unknown, I acknowledge an appreciation and acceptance of the transient nature of our world and its simple integrity, with a beauty that lies in imperfection and impermanence.

My work is a response to my observations whilst simply moving through and engaging with the landscape, by the means of photography, video, print and mixed media. My current work in progress: abstracted mixed media on canvas, in response to my images of distorted panoramic sea and landscapes.

‘Caryl’s work focuses on observing and recording the smallest insignificant details that emanate from shadows and refraction of the sunlight. Images of neglected and once abandoned buildings, traces of the layers of history that echo a universal theme of transience, absence and presence. Her investigations have led her into a micro world that requires close inspection and a magnification process in order to record the finest minutiae.’[1]

For me, photography has become an obsession.

From about the age of seven, when I was given my first camera (a  Brownie 127)* I have  captured images and events that caught my eye. Digital technology has enabled me to amass an archive to a level unimaginable in those days and the ability to archive, edit and share easily. This has particular appeal to me as the imagery is virtual and does not clutter in a physical way, although the black and white thumbnail prints from the 1950’s do have a charm and sentimentality that digital lacks.

  2. Caryl, I continue to be humbled by the wonderful variety of people who choose to follow Learning from Dogs. So thank you! Years ago your part of the world was very familiar to me. Worked in Stevenage, then Welwyn Garden City, had an Uncle and Aunt who lived in Hatfield, and more. Best wishes and keep up your amazingly creative work.
